5 Day Ice Climbing Seminar
Five days of technical ice climbing on some of the most accessible frozen waterfalls in New Zealand .This is the vertical playground for first time ice climbers to hone their skills in a winter environment. You may be a rockclimber of some merit and wish to experience the pleasure of really steep ice one hour from the car!!!!!
The Remarkables in Queenstown accesses some fine alpine playing areas. From lofty peaks to frozen waterfalls you can test your latest equipment and learn some new skills from our committed and well qualified instructors.
For five days you will be taught the safe techniques required for climbing steep ice. Your teachers come from NZOIA or NZMGA backgrounds and still climb frozen waterfalls for fun!
You will learn how to use ice axe and hammer , place your crampons, twist in ice screws, manage the rope, belay, abseil, rescue your partner, dry tool, lead on steep/vertical ice, climb on mixed terrain, make avalanche assessments, judge the weather, and look after yourself in this wonderful but hostile environment
Every day you will travel from your warm comfortable cabin with hot showers to the alpine zone and treat yourself to some great fun and adventure.
Your food/accommodation is paid for and your transport to the ice arena provided. You will need to provide your own crampons, ice axe and hammer, harness ,helmet, belay device, 50 metre rope, and whatever clothing and footwear requirements are necessary for this type of trip. If you have problems with this you can rent these items but you must book well in advance.
Snow shoes are provided as well as ice screws, snowstakes, slings, carabiners, shovels and avalanche transceivers. At the end of five days you will be reasonably comfortable in the steep ice median and you should have the skills to conquer some fine New Zealand mountains which have ice of this type.
